My gay friend told me about DOS yesterday and I expected about 5-10 people to do it. I was so surprised today when I showed up and at least 60 people were wearing rainbow colors! About 150 of us tried to remain silent throughout the entire day (It was harder for some more than others). There were even more people who said they sported LGBT but were not informed about DOS and would do it next year. Blacksburg High School supports the Day Of Silence!!! Thank you all!!!

Honestly, I don't agree with the idea of 'tweeting the silence' when the idea is to be in the first place. Mostly speaking on behalf of knowing people who would be tweeting every hour anyway, wouldn't it be bolder to have Twitter shut off instead of just pimping it out further?

But biases aside, I'm happier with people recognizing the day in the first place than not recognizing at all, so to each his and her own.

To Ms B - GLSEN puts a lot of research into selecting the date for DOS. We try to find the BEST date for the majority of the schools across the country. As you know, Easter/Passover moves around the calendar and schools have many different times they take breaks.

The reality is there's no perfect date when all schools are in session. Solution: Schedule a DOS on an another day!

I'm straight. I have participated in the Day Of Silence for four straight years now and I think it is a fantastic day. I am also in my school's GSA. I don't know what it is like to be bullied for being gay, but I'll do what I can to stop it. I agree with Austin, it is 2009, the world is changing, catch up with the rest of us. If you are so anti gay that you feel the need to post awful things that have no point to them, you are part of the reason I participate in DOS. I have openly gay friends and I have seen the hurt people like that can inflict on them. It needs to stop. We are not trying to force anything on anyone by participating in the DOS, we are simply raising awareness to the bullying and harassment, so please dont try to force your opinions on us anonymous 3:13.

As a teacher in NYC who happens to also be a lesbian, I am saddened that this day came during a vacation week here. I normally support all my students who participate and have been given permission to participate as well. Would it be possible for future days to land on a week other than Passover/Easter Vacation week? Imagine all the NY students that would be tweeting the silence today...

The first type of harassment is often linked to the second and third.

Also – when students were asked about what kinds of biased remarks they hear in school homophobic and sexist remarks are the most common type heard.

Anti-LGBT bullying does not just affect students who are LGBT – it affects students who are perceived to be LGBT and anyone who befriends them as well…

As much as I support your idea to stop anti - LGBT bullying I must voice out my opinion. Why are you doing it just for the anti-LGBT? I mean there are far more others being bullied for other reasons why is it only bad to bully LGBT? I am friends with a couple of gay guys, a few bi girls, and believe me they don't let that negative crap people say to them get to them. Why? Because it is just words and instead of listening to what some jerk off has to say to you just stand up for yourself and be proud of who you are. It's the same as me when I was bullied all through school for being overweight. Yeah it is very annoying to deal with it on a daily basis but seriously, it's just words. And by doing this you are letting them know it is getting to you. Just ignore their stupidity and be proud of who you are. So tomorrow, no day of silence for me I will stand up with my head held high and chant, "I am proud of who I am!"

that's where you're wrong. if you actually studied this, you'd find out that many animals are attracted to the same sex, especially monkey's. monkey's are the closest animal to humans, and do you think they chose to be gay? they're born attracted to the either men or women!

I also agree..ignore the anonymous person bringing people down..I do believe he/she is forgetting that God loves the world and all of his people..he may not agree with gays..and according to the bible it is a sin..but we are all sinners..and Jesus died for us bc of that fact..so being gay does not mean that God does not love you! Apparently somebody doesn't go to church. Also..God would not want you to bully others no matter what the reason. We learn in church to be nice and respect each other. I have to meet with the Student Council in about an hour and a half to get my school to support the Day of Silence. I heard about only two short days ago, but already have at least twenty people doing it, even if it is not approved by the council. This is a great Day and I support it all the way. Who cares how many "Anonynouses" say that we are wrong. Who are they to say that they are right? Tweet all you can, for this is a Day for all!

Response to Anonymous (3:10am): I can see your point about why tweet on the day if people are not supposed to be talking. Except the point of DOS is to CALL ATTENTION to the situation of students who are bullied and harassed for being LGBT or simply thought to be LGBT.

When it comes to Twitter, if we don't tweet, we'll be invisible. So the way to call attention is to tweet as much as possible and mention @dayofsilence.
