DID YOU KNOW...? Important Facts

Today is the National Day of Silence.

DID YOU KNOW...?
  • Nearly 9 out of 10 LGBT students experience harassment in American schools each year.
  • 60% of LGBT youth feel unsafe at school because of their sexual orientation.
  • Nearly 1 out of 3 LGBT youth missed school in the past month because of safety concerns.
On the National Day of Silence, hundreds of thousands of students at thousands of middle schools, high schools and colleges will take some form of a vow of silence to bring attention to anti-LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) name-calling, bullying and harassment in schools.

So...what are YOU going to do to end the silence?

All statistics were taken from the 2009 National School Climate Survey.

I made a bunch of t-shirts with friends and were all wearing them around school. We weren't allowed to make posters so are shirts are like our portable posters. We're staying silent so that maybe those in fear will use their voices.

People in my school are handing out small little flyers to kids that are staying silent. I myself am staying silent. I have gotten looks, laughs, and people are talking about me. But I am staying strong. I will not back down. Many of my friends are staying silent to support me.

In honor of Day of Silence, for every new LGBT member we get on our site, we're planting a flower in their name. There's a small space in our town and me and my friend are going to call it the Silence Garden when we plant all our flowers.

Students at my school have decided to wear red and keep silent all day. Some have even gone to the point of putting red duct tape over their mouth as well.

Our school had a lot of support for Day of Silence today. We had purple armbands and purple duct tape on our clothes and some people had tape on their mouths. We have a lot biggotry in our school. Right now a lot of people are complaining about all of the gay pride in our school. But our principal allowed us to put up posters and make morning announcements about Day of Silence and how our school's Diversity Club supports it.

Several students at my school, including myself, have taken our vow of silence. Though there have been several people who have made me want to lash out at their comments on gays and how 'stupid' or DOS is.

I live in the South, down in Georgia, so not many kids were participating in Day of Silence, and I got some strange looks. But, while some of my friends tried to force me to talk, I was pleased by how many people actually accepted what I was doing. Being queer is becoming more and more acceptable.

Day of Silence seems too be a joke too most l:
There is the anti lgbt people
& the people who are doing it
take breaks during lunch & before school
They just don't realize that people who are in the closet & those who are be harrased may never be able to take a break from the bullying......
I'm the only one besides the GSA President whose been able too keep my silence
It's sad.

Today we had our day of silence and people continously asked me what i was doing and why, i had a peice of paper printed up saying what i was doing, not many kids in my school knew about this but many joined me! It put a new view to things. It took a lot not to talk the day before spring break ;)

Hi my name is Jay. Over 30 people participated in The Day of Silence today even after our principal made us take the tape off of our mouths and give him our signs explaining why we were silent. So when he took our signs, we wrote on our arms "Support day of silence. Make a change! If you dont like it, call my mom" and then we proceded to put our phone numbers on our arms. We had a lot of hate today and I hope that will soon change. LESBIAN PRIDE!!!

the day of silent was amazing at our school. but not talking the whole day was really hard. But through it i felt closer to my friends that understand the reason behind.

Yesterday a bunch of us participated in The Day of Silence. A lot of us didn't know about it until later in the day. So we decided that on Monday we would continue in doing the day of silence. We have a group of people that constantly pick on people. Most of them are LGBT.
