Symbols: Ducking the Duct Tape

We’ve received reports from a number of organizers who have suffered problems after wearing duct tape on their mouths. As a consequence we feel it is important to address this safety issue. While we have never encouraged nor endorsed wearing duct tape for the Day of Silence, we recognize that the symbolism of putting duct tape over the mouth has become quite popular amongst some DOS organizers.

Duct tape uses a very strong, water-resistant adhesive. When students attempt to take off the tape we have heard about a range of problems. In some instances there have been minor issues such as having difficulty removing the tape's glue from skin. In other more severe cases, students have experienced hair removal, rashes and skin irritation, and torn or ripped skin. Because of this risk, we do not recommend using duct tape on your skin during the Day of Silence. Your silence will be powerful without it.

UPDATE: As one organizer has just pointed out, students who wear lip jewelry could be in for a painful breaking the silence.

If people still want to use tape, a safe alternative is masking tape- it still has the visual impact while being a lot less sticky. Still, it's not totally risk-free, so the best bet is just putting something on your shirt!

What about duct tape over masking tape? Duct tape would hurt like a beezy on a lip ring!

There's also marking tape that you use when you paint to protect the wood molding. It has very little adhesive on it and comes right off.

Last year I didn't put anything over my mouth, but this year I'm using a mask.

It looks somewhat like masks that doctors use, but it's cloth and has designs on it.

Really, I think a mask is the best alternative as it doesn't leave any residue behind and it is in no way painful.

You may still choose to use duct tape. Just make sure to put it on a sweater a few times, as this will reduce it's stickiness.

A warning to the guys involved- Beards/Mustaches + Duct Tape = A bad idea. Shave!

how about just putting duck tape on a mask and put that on, that's what im planing doing.

if i can't find some money for the tape or friends who have multiple colors then i'll just wear the mask

We used black painter's tape and a silver marker when I was in high school. And we only did the tape during lunch.

Or you could use the blue painters tape. It's very visually striking on any shade of skin, because it's bright blue, but it has almost no adhesive... it's meant to stick to walls and come off easily. Isn fact, you might have to replace it during the day if you lick your lips too much!

I was thinking about doing duct tape, but also considered the fact that it would hurt to take it off. In lieu, I have decided to roll up a bandanna and tie it around my mouth, which I think is the easiest and best way with what I have in my house.

I used rainbow band aids last year. I put the long stripes ones and formed an 'x' on my mouth. I was considering to use duct tape because someone gave a tip that you could put it on fabric then put it on for that way it'll hurt less.

I'm not going for duct tape. wayy too painful sounding. Even scotch tape is noticeable enough, and not painful to take off.

What I do is take a strip of duct tape about long enough to reach the back of my jaw bone on either side, then put another strip (same size) adhesive to adhesive and put holes in either end. With a little bit of string, you can tie it behind your head and it still looks like you're duct taped (and if you use the bright red type, it's VERY visually stunning. I got random people I'd never met before asking me what was going on, and showed them my speaking cards).

There's also spirit gum if you want to do it this way without the string.

I would recommend using a bandana.. I'm doing that.

Or use Electrical Tape. I put it on my mouth all the time when I get bored in Science. It does still hurt a bit when you take it off, but so do most tapes.

last year i used this spray cap, and taped a little piece of posterboard to it saying "We should be able to say who we love without fear" and held it with my teeth. It's not as uncomfortable as it sounds and you can take it out when you're in a situation where you know you won't speak (i.e. test) Idk, i might use painter's tape this year.

I agree with using a bandanna. Get one for every color of the rainbow and stand in a line!

There are medical tapes made for skin. That could be an alternative. They have two inch tape. My dad had diabetis and had tape (changed daily) on a wound on his foot for years. Check the drugs store!

If my friend can bring me duck tape I'm gonna use it. It doesn't affect me. I'm really excited. I'm just waiting for my shirt to come :) hopefully it comes before friday.

Do you think athletic tape would be okay to wear?

Anonymous said...

I'm using masking tape over my mouth and using my markers to make a rainbow on it for the full affect. Since my school has very little rally for this I want to set an example

last year some students had the duck tape for a pro-life abortion, but on the day of silence some students were pulled out of class and the school demanded that they take it off. later i talked to when i was talking to the senior that planed the pro-life one said they didn't ask the school anything just did it... and they got to keep there tape on

In the first place why do you have to put a duct tape to your mouth? Just want to hut yourself?

Our school wont let us putthe tape on our mouths so this year we are going to put it cross our chest and write "I'm silent for..." and the nput what we are silent for. Just an idea

What I've done for the past couple years is black eyeliner and Sharpie(make sure your Sharpie is non-toxic). I just draw an X across my mouth. It's very visually striking, and many people thought it was tape. Eyeliner directly on the lips(doesn't require nearly as much upkeep as lipstick) and Sharpie past the lips.

I'm using duct tape today and I have to say that it is very annoying and hurts when I go to take it off..I wouldn't use it if I were you

Our GSA actually discourages covering mouths. We had some issues last year with students getting in trouble for using surgical masks. We don't want to make enemies with the administration. But we also have the advantage of having tshirts and a couple posters.

My first year out of high school while I was at work, I wasn't sure what they would say about me being silent. So what I did was print out a rainbow pride ribbon off the computer and taped it to my shirt. I still stayed silent but when I was asked, I had to say it was the Day of Silence (as they'd never really heard of it much). That or I had my mom speak it or I tried signing it because a couple of co-workers are deaf that I worked with and I know a few signs (as well as they know how to read lips).

Don't use tape at all! In our school we used colorful bandanas that stood out in contrast to our all black attire.
