Let’s get a Twitter movement going for this year’s Day of Silence. It’s a way everyone can get involve
d even if your school isn’t participating in the day of action. Let’s generate some Twitter buzz to support everyone taking a vow of silence. Here’s how:
From now until Friday the 17th tweet at least once a day about the Day of Silence. And invite your friends to tweet about it too. And tweet them to become a Day of Silence follower.
On Friday the 17th
On the Day of Silence tweet about it as much as possible.
Important: If you are a student in middle or high school, make sure you only tweet during times that your school permits. Tweet in the morning before school starts, at lunch (if allowed), and especially after school. If you can’t tweet any other time, plan to tweet within one hour after classes end. We hope that will create a rolling, growing Twitter movement from the East to the West coast as schools close for the day. Students in Alaska and Hawaii, join in when you can. And if you live outside the U.S. you can be a part too.
Tweet topics
Tweet what you’re doing for DOS. Tweet how many students are participating at your school. Tweet the different ways you’re getting support. Tweet if you’re holding a Breaking the Silence event. Tweet about how many buttons you’re wearing. Tweet about the reactions of your classmates.
Basically, if it has to do with DOS, tweet it in the days leading up to Friday.
Tagging your tweets
Don’t forget to mention DOS (@dayofsilence) by using the “@” or “#” tags. For general Twitter info, click here. (Now you can use the “@dayofsilence” anywhere in your tweet, not just at the beginning.) More about this tag, click here.
Follow Friday
April 17th is a Friday, so you can also tag your tweets: #followfriday. That’s a great way to recommend to other Twitter users who to follow. Find out about Follow Friday here and here.

You might want to change the section where it says to tweet before school, at lunch, and after school. My school (and MANY others) don't allow you to use your cell phone at lunch, so you might wanna change that.
Thanks CyBrian. I made the update.
why do we do this?? like its so dumb. who wants to be quite all day to suport gay kids???
We do it to help them deal with the harrasment from people like you.
Unlike the Anonymous that said "why do we do this?? like its so dumb. who wants to be quite all day to suport gay kids???" i ABSOLUTELY love this day. Noone deserves to be harrased for the sex they maybe attracted too. I just wanna thank whoever made this day up!
What kind of harrassment are you talking about? If you gay people want to live a gay lifestyle there is no need to shout about it. Just live it quietly, there is no need to force your beliefs on the whole society.
Just live your life quietly. No need to push your GAY propaganda onto others. Dont forget that you are a minority in this country or all over the world, and it will forever remain that way. Stay in your closets, and do what you please, but there is no need to spread this lie.
Being GAY is a choice, you are not born with it, dont let people lie to you.
Every living being on this earth was created by God, and He wasnt wrong when He created a woman for the man, He didnt create a man for the man, He didnt create a woman foe a woman, in the beginning it was ADAM and EVE, NOT Adam and Steve. And Because God was the beginning, and He is the end, this law shall remain FOREVER as long as life on this planet called earth shall remain.
Even animals know that a male needs a female to mate, and vise versa. Humans especially need to know that....the woman was created for the man, and the man for the woman.
Everything else is a lie, and sooner or later those who live a gay lifestyle will come to realize that, that WAS and IS and Forever WILL BE true.
So you can tweet all you want, but the lie that is hidden behind Homosexuality will still come to light and people will come to know the TRUTH. That homosexuality is a choice that people make, it is not something to be proud of, It is something that they need help with to be free from it.
Make a choice today to be who God made you to be. If you were created a woman, you were created so, for a reason. If you were created a man, be a man, act like a man and dont act like a woman. You will never be one.
Perfection is.....man + woman = marriage = children = future
WHats your future???
Do you even have one???
Think today, while its not to late.
I have a feeling anonymous is just that... a frightened, finger-pointing bully that doesn't even know who he or she (or it!) is, so signs as a unknown - short for coward. Whoever indoctrinated you into 'godliness' did a fine job - apparently you think you ARE one! And oops, they omitted humility, of which you have none. Who's trying to push their beliefs on whom??!! You pontificate (look it up) and spew your uneducated and maladjusted judgement on others... what are you doing on this site anyway??!! Go find out who YOU are, before you even presume to tell others...
This is to annonymous.
BEING GAY ISNT A CHOICE!
Let's turn this around: Instead of giving Anonymous (3:13pm) so much attention for saying being gay is a choice, let's focus on why we posted this blog entry.
Stay balanced. Spread the word about "Tweeting the Silence!" Don't let Anonymous distract you from all the positive things you want to achieve on the Day of Silence.
i think this day is great =]
Okay, I'm confused.
Just to clarify...
Tweet the silence is the 17th and the actual day is the 25th? Or is it all on the 17th? Or the 25th?
...I'm lost :(
I'll definitely be doing this.
Isn't it a little bit funny to tweet on the day of silence itself? Isn't that equivalent to talking on that day?
I love the day of silence, this is a day when people can express themselves as a large group, and stand firm as a group to shut down annoying people like that anonymous guy/girl who is trying to put them down....
but i agree, dont let people like him/her distract you, this is a day to stand up for what you believe in, so do that, and forget about the people like him...
I am here, representing my school, because noone else will :) Seven Bridges School, Florida supports the Day Of Silence :)
Response to "Day" - For 2009 the Day of Silence is on April 17th. The date changes from year to year. Last year it was the 25th.
Response to Anonymous (3:10am): I can see your point about why tweet on the day if people are not supposed to be talking. Except the point of DOS is to CALL ATTENTION to the situation of students who are bullied and harassed for being LGBT or simply thought to be LGBT.
When it comes to Twitter, if we don't tweet, we'll be invisible. So the way to call attention is to tweet as much as possible and mention @dayofsilence.
I have to meet with the Student Council in about an hour and a half to get my school to support the Day of Silence. I heard about only two short days ago, but already have at least twenty people doing it, even if it is not approved by the council. This is a great Day and I support it all the way. Who cares how many "Anonynouses" say that we are wrong. Who are they to say that they are right? Tweet all you can, for this is a Day for all!
I also agree..ignore the anonymous person bringing people down..I do believe he/she is forgetting that God loves the world and all of his people..he may not agree with gays..and according to the bible it is a sin..but we are all sinners..and Jesus died for us bc of that fact..so being gay does not mean that God does not love you! Apparently somebody doesn't go to church. Also..God would not want you to bully others no matter what the reason. We learn in church to be nice and respect each other. I'm very proud to promote this day so that people like anonymous can see what they are doing to others. I'm not trying to discriminate against them either..I just want them to realize that it is wrong.
I would have to agree with most people, lets just ignore the rude comments from the anonymous and continue with this day of silence! =)
I love how people who say being gay is a choice aren't even gay. HAH. how would they know then? people are pathetic.
"Even animals know that a male needs a female to mate, and vise versa. Humans especially need to know that....the woman was created for the man, and the man for the woman."
that's where you're wrong. if you actually studied this, you'd find out that many animals are attracted to the same sex, especially monkey's. monkey's are the closest animal to humans, and do you think they chose to be gay? they're born attracted to the either men or women!
and excuse me, but what about all the children in orphanages? gay couples can't produce together, no, but they can take in a child without a home.
it's 2009 people, stop being so closed minded.
im wondering how we can get the official excuse and pamphlets to say WHY were doing the DOS?
Hey Chris - and everyone: You can download materials HERE.
As for an "official excuse" - you should work that out directly with your teachers and school administration - in advance. MORE INFO HERE.
Hi everyone - Well, well, some people are a getting little heated about the big religious comment at the top.
We love to see all your feedback, however we will refrain from approving comments that contain abusive language. Remember, we want to set a good example for everyone online.
And focusing on one old comment seems like it's taking away from the point of this posting: We want to ENCOURAGE YOU to "Tweet the Silence" tomorrow.
As much as I support your idea to stop anti - LGBT bullying I must voice out my opinion. Why are you doing it just for the anti-LGBT? I mean there are far more others being bullied for other reasons why is it only bad to bully LGBT? I am friends with a couple of gay guys, a few bi girls, and believe me they don't let that negative crap people say to them get to them. Why? Because it is just words and instead of listening to what some jerk off has to say to you just stand up for yourself and be proud of who you are. It's the same as me when I was bullied all through school for being overweight. Yeah it is very annoying to deal with it on a daily basis but seriously, it's just words. And by doing this you are letting them know it is getting to you. Just ignore their stupidity and be proud of who you are. So tomorrow, no day of silence for me I will stand up with my head held high and chant, "I am proud of who I am!"
To Anon at 1:46
According to students (http://is.gd/sNRJ) the three most common reasons students are bullied or harassed are: 1) the way they look or body size, 2) actual or perceived sexual orientation and 3) how masculine or feminine they are. The first type of harassment is often linked to the second and third.
Also – when students were asked about what kinds of biased remarks they hear in school homophobic and sexist remarks are the most common type heard.
Anti-LGBT bullying does not just affect students who are LGBT – it affects students who are perceived to be LGBT and anyone who befriends them as well…
Let’s live the day of silence for Tibet, or the religious monks. There is any initiative that will change this craving to be accepted in your choices. Stop the cyber bullying.
I applaud everyone who is taking part in ANY way to stop bullying of innocent people...for whatever reason they are being bullied. Anything you do which brings awareness to the public and helps to educate is a great thing. Don't give any more time or energy to those who are trying to sabbotoge the effort. Good luck tomorrow to everyone!
As a teacher in NYC who happens to also be a lesbian, I am saddened that this day came during a vacation week here. I normally support all my students who participate and have been given permission to participate as well. Would it be possible for future days to land on a week other than Passover/Easter Vacation week? Imagine all the NY students that would be tweeting the silence today...
Heyy.
I love the Day of Silence.
(; Gay people are amazing.
Just because you like someone of your own sex doesn't give others the right to harrass you.
I support the Day Of Silence 100%.
I have many gay friends and I love each and every one of them.
(: Yay, go Gay!.
Thankks,
Tiara.
dI love the gayy.
To Ms B - GLSEN puts a lot of research into selecting the date for DOS. We try to find the BEST date for the majority of the schools across the country. As you know, Easter/Passover moves around the calendar and schools have many different times they take breaks.
The reality is there's no perfect date when all schools are in session. Solution: Schedule a DOS on an another day!
I'm straight. I have participated in the Day Of Silence for four straight years now and I think it is a fantastic day. I am also in my school's GSA. I don't know what it is like to be bullied for being gay, but I'll do what I can to stop it. I agree with Austin, it is 2009, the world is changing, catch up with the rest of us. If you are so anti gay that you feel the need to post awful things that have no point to them, you are part of the reason I participate in DOS. I have openly gay friends and I have seen the hurt people like that can inflict on them. It needs to stop. We are not trying to force anything on anyone by participating in the DOS, we are simply raising awareness to the bullying and harassment, so please dont try to force your opinions on us anonymous 3:13.
r.i.p. carl walker-hoover, who would have turned 12 today.
Hey, i is back TWEETING :)
hey everyone!
just letting you know that i am in school right this second supporting the Day Of Silence..this is my first time ever participating.. but i think the idea is fantastic! and i will definatley be doing this every year now.
keep doin what you're doin people!
I'm at school supporting the day of silence again with a lot of my friends, and most of us are straight!!
Honestly, I don't agree with the idea of 'tweeting the silence' when the idea is to be in the first place. Mostly speaking on behalf of knowing people who would be tweeting every hour anyway, wouldn't it be bolder to have Twitter shut off instead of just pimping it out further?
But biases aside, I'm happier with people recognizing the day in the first place than not recognizing at all, so to each his and her own.
My son is 15 and straight, and I'm so proud of him for participating this day in the Day of Silence!!! Rock on everyone! There are people out there who love you just the way you are!!!
My gay friend told me about DOS yesterday and I expected about 5-10 people to do it. I was so surprised today when I showed up and at least 60 people were wearing rainbow colors! About 150 of us tried to remain silent throughout the entire day (It was harder for some more than others). There were even more people who said they sported LGBT but were not informed about DOS and would do it next year. Blacksburg High School supports the Day Of Silence!!! Thank you all!!!
Day of silence is amazing. I and may others wore day or silence stickers today at school and tried not to talk, although i was not successful with that. I am a proud lesbian.
I love this day. It is a day I can tell people what is going on. this is real people are who they are. you cant change who you are and bullying is not goin to be taken. we are humans to and deserve the same rights as all other humans.
