Why the Day of Silence exists

The following is an unedited transcript of a series of phone messages we received in the days following Lawrence King's murder. It tells you all you need to know about what students endure every day and why we need the Day of Silence. This will be very disturbing for some, so we advise caution in reading on.

Message 1

I just want to say that I think what you are doing is pretty disgusting, trying to push your perversions on straight kids that are in schools and stuff. You’ve got no business being in schools, OK. We don’t need your kind of crap.

Message 2

Stop trying to spread your filthy perversions on innocent children. Those are not your children. They are other people’s children. They don’t have to accept your perverted nastiness. I mean, come on. When are you guys going to get a clue? You do perverted sex acts on each other. And that’s the kind of crap that you want to push on innocent little children? God is going to punish you.

Message 3

Yeah, and also by the way, that 15-year-old Lawrence King pretty much got what he deserved, really, because he was allowed to walk around school wearing makeup and women’s jewelry and acting and trying to push it. What’s up with that? Why doesn’t anybody say anything about that? That kind of nonsense doesn’t even belong in school. Boys should act like boys and dress like boys, and girls should dress like girls. And that’s the end of it. If he didn’t want to draw any unneeded attention aside from acting gay, then, maybe that wouldn’t have happened. There’s something for you to think about. And of course you guys will never see that. You just see what you want to see. You want to act out your perversions and have everyone accept it and force it down everyone’s throat. You’ve got no right going into the public schools. It’s one thing to defend someone who’s wrongfully abused in a situation, but that’s the family’s responsibility. It certainly isn’t yours to bring into the public schools and force your filth on innocent girls and boys.

First of all how are you guys going to sit here and talk crap about stuff you don't even know I am straight and i will always be straight but that's besides the point. The reason for day of silence is for those people whom can't speak out for themselves, for example yes gay's and lesbian's. But also for those people who are bullied and for those whose are chosen against because religion or racism. Yes it is mainly about the gays and lesbians but so what who are you to judge them???????? Why do you feel that you need to take time out of your day to worry about other people.... Nobody is trying to push thier orientation on anyone they have freedom of speech and they are going to use it. Atleast they aren't trying to use it in a negative way like most of you negative people.................

I think that this organization is a shoulder for everyone out there who feels discriminated to lean on. Whether it is our family, friends, or other who don't support us we need someone to turn to. All the people in this prganization are interested in helping those individuals. I deal with discrimination everyday in my home. Whether you are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or any other sexual orientation, you deserve to be treated equally. It's one thing to disagree with our way of living, but please do not discriminate against us. We are people just like everyone else.

Don't stir the fire with articles like this. I am sure that there were also sympathetic phone calls as well. Please could you post some of those?

You know what...who are we to judge? God is the only one who has the right to judge us...and Im straight but tomorrow i will be supporting DOS at Stagg Highschool. To me this day symbolizes how inconciderate and narrow minded our country has become, this is exactly why there is so much violence in america and why the war wont stop...because so many people are to consumed about them selves and cant even stop for one second and think of someone else. And DOS is not a day where people push their life styles onto others...if thats what you guys think then you seriously have things twisted...regardless of how you feel this day does exist and you cant take it away...as long as this day occurs i will be a supporter. =)

Look, I understand your dislike of the idea that people with a different sexual orientation exist. I know that for a long time I myself couldn't shake the feeling of unease I got in my gut every time I was around a person who was not straight. For a while I even avoided one of my best friends. Why? Because it was truly creepy; that a girl I had weekly sleepovers with might like me instead of some cute boy at school. For some reason I thought that because she liked her own gender, she would like every girl, which now I think is completely not true. Also, I was, and still am very involved in my religion, and at the time, I interpreted homosexuality as a sin against God. But, (in my faith at least, I don't know abut yours), God is about love, and I decided to try to figure out what she was feeling. So we talked about it, and do you want to know what? She was still the same person, and we were still great friends. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I totally get your feelings about it being wrong and creepy and stuff, (although I don't agree, it's an opinion you're allowed to have) but in the end, it doesn't matter if you're gay straight or a little curvy, you're just a person!

It's really funny to see how far out of the way some people will go. This web sight was made for all the right reasons. and yet people o out of there way to come to this web sight to preach the bible as if they are god. but in reality who are they, really. They're not god. and hell they act as if you're telling the world to be gay. you're not though. you're only helping those who feel love in different ways to not be ashamed of it but to realize that it's ok. that there is so much more in life than the criticisms of all the haters out there. to me it's really dumb how close minded some people are. they don't look any farther than they're told to. who's to say who goes to heaven or hell or paradise. who's to say that's what even happens after we die. How we live our life and what we believe is not up to them. You're right despite what they say. lets see them prove you wrong, lets see them prove me wrong. to me life is just the first step in whats to come. life is not about what others think. it's about what you think and chose. don't ever let any one tell you you're wrong, because you're never wrong until you decide that yourself. so for every one out there man or woman, young or old, gay, straight, bi, or even transvestite. This is for you. Your not doing anything wrong. you just being you and there is nothing wrong with that.

Ethan Ellis I live in Pocatello Idaho. I'm bi and proud.

Gays and lesbians are people too. They have feelings and it hurts when jerks stomp on them. Don't talk crap you have no knowledge of. I will stand beside Gays and Lesbians till the end of the earth because i love that they have the strength to go against people who are blind to see. By the way i am a bisexual!!! And if it was a sin or against GOD why am i this way think about that.!!!

A friend recently sent me a link to an article that was full of the exact same stuff. It was copied and sent out to parents, teachers and school administrators all across the country in an effort to stop the DoS from having an impact. They wanted prinicples to take their school district from the list of participants, and parents to keep their kids at home on the 25th so they wouldn't be "exposed to the homosexual lifestyle". In response, I wrote up a blog of my own. If you could take the time to read it, I would appreciate it.

A link to the forementioned article is included for those of the curious nature.

Thanks for your time.

i agree with Mariah...what gives you the right to go around judging everyone who is different to you??? no one! it just goes to show how narrow minded some people are, i am straight, all of my friends are straight, i have only met a few bisexual people in my life, but that sexual orientation has nothing to do with what kind of person they are. people are people and you can't judge them baised on their sexual preferences. Just because it may be different to you or you may be a little scared because it is not familiar...it doesn't mean that you should be so harsh!!! How I know God to be is loving and forgiving... and from what i understand is that love is unconditional and infinite... You need to take a step back and get to know what you are talking about a little bit better because everyhting you are saying is biggoted and arrogant. It is a free country and you can have your own opinion, but take a look at what the actual purpose of DOS is all about becasue it is painfully obvious that you have NO IDEA!!!

ohkay so i had this discussion today actually. two guys in my last class were saying how gays "arent real people" and they shouldnt be around, yadda yadda. HELLO. a person is a living being with bendable thumbs, organs, blood, and who BREATHES. so for the more ignorant people, yes they are real people. and gays/lesbians have JUST as much right as straight people! and saying that they try to push their orientation on other people? HA. what a laugh. i know many gay/lesbian people and they have never tried to push it on me. im 100% straight and ive never had any of that pushed on me. you want to know who pushes things the most? religious people. and im not bad mouthing them, but im stating facts. im atheist, and i can garauntee a lot of people who read this will dislike me just for that reason. i am constantly being told im going to hell and what not. but i think that christians push their religion on people SOOOO MUCH MORE then non-straight people do! so are you saying that since gays/lesbians shouldnt be in public schools because they "push it" on people that major religious people shouldnt be allowed to either? think about it. same thing. and they do perverted sex acts on each other WHAT?!?! hello. men & women do WAY worse things. sex is sex no matter how you look at it or however you want to candy-coat it. there's not point in hating a gay, lesbien, bisexual, or transgender because of their orientation. hate the people who MURDER who RAPE who BEAT LITTLE KIDS. hate the people that are really a threat to you, not the ones who are trying to live their lives. learn to argue and spend your time dwelling on important issues in this world. 9 times out of 10, a STRAIGHT MAN just raped an innocent CHILD. sexual orientation doesnt matter. its freedom of right. its freedom of action. its freedom of speech. and to be honest, i hope all the people who hate the people who dont have the same orientation as them, end up having gay/lesbian/bisexual children. they deserve every minute of it. and to anyone who judges by orientation, color, looks, religion, etc. remember, those people could be the only people around to save your life one day. they could be the only person to match your blood type when your inches from death. tell me, why should they help save your life, when you think theirs is meaningless?

ok im sorry but kids of any sexual preferance wouldnt have to die if ignerante people would pull there heads out of there ass u come to school dressed as preps, jocks, rockers, gansta what ever and no one says ne thing to u but the second a guy wants to dress like a girl or a girl like a guy its all wrong no that is so hypcritical its pathetic and we arent trying to force our belives on u but if u look in to it you will see that it is not the person it is a chemical inbalinse in there brain i no a kid that would give anything to be straight because everyday someone has 2 call him names and hit him and mess with him DO U GET IT he doesnt want to be him self because of people like u and niether do i im bi and im afraid ill get made fun of so i dont tell people
and if u really want to throw god in the mix i got so fast pitches 1st jesus's best friends were the sinners so do u really want to go there and some where there is a verse that says something to the point of jesus loves sinners also in the bible it may very well say its a sin but can u honstley say u never sinned ever in your life...and jesus died for our sin so where fine now u juging what only god can juge is not cool when you learn that u cant change people to fit ur standards then u will be way better off

i don't see how all of you can say stuff, like tht gay people have " no right to be in public school" like are you kiding me gay people are still people it doesn't matter if your straight, gay, white, or black people are people and we all have the same rights. And BTW the the last message you said that Lawrence king deserved to die becasue he was openly gay. Well thats fairly harsh seeing as he must have had bigger balls then you. becasue i'm pretty damn sure that if you were gay you wouldn't have enough balls to be openly gay. And also obviusly gay people are gunna shove it down other peoples throat becasue they are trying to get it through peoples brain that they are still people. They don't choose to be gay it's something you are born with. And i'm positive that many people from the gay lesbian bi-sexual and transgender community would change it in a heart beat but they have learned to accept who they are. and i'm not sure if you noticed but you will never hear a gay person say something harsh about another sexuality. becasue they know whats it's like to be shit talked about. so before you go saying crap like that Lawrence King deserved to die maybe learn the facts

Day Of Silence is important to people who know that other peoples lifes are important just as much as any one else i respect the fact that you could be all that you are and shouldn't be ashamed you shouldn't have to cover up who you are. Who are you to decide whether some one should live or not especially based on who they personally are. its unfair to say that this kid got what he deserved its not your desicion to end his life because your afraid of things you've never felt or had to deal with. Grow up people.

people need to just shut up!!
we're alaways going to have to deal with people who dont believe. That's just how it's gonna be.You'll have those who dont believe its sinful-and those who do. Im not saying there's anything wrong with standing up for what you believe in ad who you are.My school is in the process of DOS right at this moment.I am participating no doubt, but I'm not arguing with nayone trying to chnage their beliefs. It's just i really dont think you can change the way someone feels about it by arguing with them. And honeslty.DO YOU????

its amazes me how ignorant and hateful people are to others just because they were born gay. If there really is a god then it is those haters that are the true sinners and they will get a rude awakening when it is time for their own judgement of their sins for spreading hatred, and for wanting to cause harm to their fellow man/woman. Nobody can speak for God except himself and just because someone wrote something in a book doesn't mean that thats what is defines what is right and what is wrong, there are allot of things in the bible that would be considered a sin in todays world and every day i bet every person on this planet has committed sin each day of the year according to their bible. So pretty much everyone is going to hell then. So I'll see you there with me HATERS!

The third message really irks me,
"that 15-year-old Lawrence King pretty much got what he deserved" I don't understand! No one has the right to kill anybody and esp not for such a petty reason the people who shot Lawrence are not God, they don't have the right to decide weather or not someone should live or die. People don't choose to be gay and it's disgusting that sometimes gay people feel like they have to hide their orientaion.
Plus if these people really knew their bible they would understand that God loves everybody! God isn't going to punish someone for their orientation because he MADE them that way! Just like he made the person who wrote message 3 a self centered jerk, who doesn't know what he/ she is talking about!
