6,800!

Day of Silence registration continues to break records. We just passed students registering from 6,800 middle and high schools! We'd love to pass 7,000. Make sure you sign up if you haven't yet.

Last year at this time, we had slightly more than 4,000.

Thank you to everyone who is doing their part to make sure that what happened to Lawrence King never happens again.

Don't forget to check out our Facebook (here and here) and MySpace pages (here and here).

This map shows the concentration of student-led Day of Silence events around the country for 2008. There are events being held in all states and the darker the color the more DOS events. The underlying data was supplied by students who registered their participation at StudentOrganizing.org.

I know 7,000 was broken for sure.
Today we started signing up students...
We had 197 sign up(including some faculty members). Tomorrow we will be out with our ally cards again.
Tomorrow we're all supposed to wear red.
I've never been so excited for DOS

It would be nice to see stats for Alaska and Hawaii, too. (Maps generally put us together just off the coast of California. If only. :-) GSA's at several high schools here in Anchorage, and I believe also in Juneau and Fairbanks, are participating.

The reason Alaska and Hawaii don't show up on the map is due to the fact that GLSEN doesn't have a graphics designer creating it. Instead, the map is dynamically generated from the raw registration data. So that's pretty cool. But because we are using open source (free) software, it does what it does (lower 48 only) pretty well for the price.

Alaska and Hawaii, we know you're there and that you're participating in the Day of Silence! If you are registered at StudentOrganizing.org we'll be sending follow up email next week so that we can get your feedback after DOS.

Yes, Alaskan students are participating in Day of Silence! The GSA's in Anchorage, Juneau and Fairbanks participate, and so do many individual students around the state in schools that don't have GSA's.
